Chaat Ka Chaska Indian Street Food

Indian street food is kinda gaining momentum in this one horse town... But it will prolly never become the music for the masses. Let's face it, whities don't do ethnic grub... Some may say they do but it's limited to California rolls and lo mein. Indian grub will never be a favorite to the pale ones... Unless you count that dump, Panahar (must be that mango lassi). I don't know why roundeyes dislike curry vittles et al... Maybe it's the spices, maybe it's the pungent smells. Maybe it seems dirty to them when they see people eating the food with their hands and feets like a hobo on Pine Street.
Masti, Chai Pani and Bhojanic are pretty popular but they are also fusion and less threatening with fun bright colors like at a Dave & Busters. Whities love D&Bs, it's so bizarre. But let's take a first look at the newest Indian street grub joint that no one in ITP will ever go to... It's across from the BAPS Hindu temple. It has a rather large space with a handful of tables spread out to make it look filled. It's the stereotypical Indian decor in here which is a cross between cheesy and gaudy. There's these day beds/trampolines on the side for which I can only imagine to be used to take naps after a self induced food coma from all the carbs... Smart. But after witnessing unbehaved kids crawling all over them with their filthy paws and piehole spittle, I would suggest you pass on laying on them. Another thing I would also avoid using are the steel cups on the tables... They just look gross. The manufacturer's sticker on the cups are half peeled off and the glue on them has turned into a brown gummy mess around the rim of the cup, not exactly something you want to put your mouth around a brown rim... Unless you're into that kinky shit. Let's go try some slutty street morsels made by brownies...

Samosa. For $3.95, this was a deal for 5 plump samosas. Filled nicely with taters and veggies inside and a crispy delicate crust on the outside. They were surprisingly good given the lack of service or staff in this joint. The tamarind chutney/sauce was ultra liquidity... I saw a dude come out of the toilet carrying a bucket... Stop, I don't even wanna know... Ok, there is a 50/50 chance this sauce came from there. The cilantro/mint sauce was better but not by much. But as for the samosas themselves, they were very decent.

Dosa, masala. There's a bunch of different dosa filler/topping options available, the pouch went with the classic masala tater filled Hindu pancake. This version was in a big triangle vs. the standard rolled fatty. Some other tables had rolled up one and others had folded up ones... No rhyme or reason for the different shapes. I don't know what the kitchen was smoking but it musta been some good shit. The dosa was pretty nice, it had a firm texture with a slight crack to it but also was soft to the chew. The tater filling was pretty generous. The side stuff were kinda weak and tasteless. Seems like all the side sauces were their weakness so far.

Vada Pav. These little fried tater street sliders are some of my favorites. A lot places do them, some are good and some are garbage but this joint had some very respectable ones. They were pretty plump with a spot on batter thickness, not too thin not too thick. The potato and veggie filler inside were just right. The Publix dinner rolls were fine, just a vehicle to slide those tater poppers right into your face gash.

Gujarati Thali, veggie curry, lental, paratha, khichadi, papad, achar. Always gotta get the thali, the only way to judge an Indian joint's legitimacy. This wasn't bad at all. The papadum was crackly good as were the paratha soft and pliable. The khichadi of rice and lentils were soft yet toothy. The veggie curry was mostly taters but it did have a small amount of spice and kick to it. The bowl of white juice was no achar but it did have a pickled taste to it.

I don't know how long this Indian street food scheme is gonna last in this town but as for the samples I have tasted at this joint, I think it will last at least to midyear... That will give me enough time to come back here and try some of their other smut... Like the ragda pettis (tater patties), pav bhaji, pani puri, sev puri and bhel. The service is hit or miss with the limited staff on hand but the grub was surprisingly tasty. Even though, it was vegetarian, I would prolly do this skank again if I was upstate this way in the future.
