Tomo

Some of my high roller friends who love sushi came in from L.A. for the weekend... Shit, I can't take them to Ru San's, they have some of the best sushi houses in that two horse town. Since, the ultra trendy UMI wasn't open yet, I had to come up with something a little more fancy than Taka and they didn't want to drive far from the Ritz Buckhead... So, that means Shoya, Huku and Hayakawa was out and Tomo was in. I haven't been back since he moved to Buckhead, no better time to make a visit with an old friend then now.

We had a pretty large group (10 peeps), ordered a shitload of tasty morsels and the plates came out fast and furious... Didn't even have time to take a snapshot of every dish, let alone sample everything that came out. But that's ok, though, the booze was flowing steady like a college kid pissing behind his beat up Hyundai or was that me... Nevermind. Yeah, it was pretty chaotic with this rowdy crowd but it worked out pretty well. Let's get to good stuff...

Golden Platter of the Gods, amaebi, uni, shima-aji, toro, tamago, maguro, kimme-dai, spider roll. Everything was super fresh and tasty but one item caught my eyeball... The tamago was perfect, not one speck of brown in it. Yeah, I'm jizzing over a fucking egg omelet sooshee because that shit is hard to get right and they killed that tonight.

Hamachi Kama. C'mon, this kama was spot on, look at the friggin pic! So good, crispy and flaky.

Tomo Urchin, medium-rare sea urchin tempura wrapped in shiso & seaweed, sea salt, yuzu, tomo salsa. Ah, his signature pièce de résistance! Shit was da bomb. Had to order a couple more of this. I love gonads.

Crispy Soft Shell Crab Tempura. Who doesn't love dirty bottom dwelling sea spiders fried up? Yeah, it didn't suck.

Kampachi Serrano. Had to ordered 4 of this. Yeah, even the whities at the table gobbled this up.

Shima Aji Carpaccio, spicy Asian salsa. One of my favorite fish. It's just plain amazing by itself.

Live Scallop Sashimi. Scallop this fresh is not offered everywhere, it's usually frozen and defrosted. You bet your ass this was tasty. Werd.

Kimme-Dai Sashimi. Might not be the most pretty dish but close your eyes and put it in your mouth... It's like frolicking with Kate Upton on the beach. Kimme-dai is not available at most sushi joints but if they have it, get it.

Lobster Cake. It's a purdy dish and tasted decent but it had too much going on masking the natural sweetness of the lobster.

Some white people ordered this assortment. Not that it was bad, it was pretty tasty but look at that presentation! At least there weren't any California rolls on it... Or else I would have to pretend I was at a communal table. Oh, wait, there's a sad and lonely tuna roll on that other plate... Haha, so pathetic looking.

Shrimp & Veggie Tempura. I know it's pedestrian as shit but I love fried shit. And this was good fried shit.

Other dishes that were inhaled in seconds included ankimo, aji tataki, tuna avocado salad, miso black cod boston, unagi and few other tidbits.

Everything we had were top notch, the new space is nice and trendy but I kinda miss the original spot, it was more cozy and you get a better personal experience from Tomo. He did hangout for a few minutes shooting the shit but with a large dining room he needed more time to get around and  schmooze. Is it a scene here? No doubt but the menu and execution is still pretty spot on and consistent. I would definitely be back sooner rather than later. Umi was good but Tomo still delivers across the board.
